• When the Japanese opened its door to the Western culture, one of their main concerns was to know how Western political institutions, especially parliamentary government, were working. So Hiroyuki Kato in his Tonarigusa (1863) introduced the parliamentary reform in Britain, but said nothing about the English Revolution. Then Yukichi Fukuzawa, searching for the origins of the Western civilization and following the course of British constitutional development, laid too much stress on the significance of the Glorious Revolution. Parliamentary reform and the Glorious Revolution were the main topics when the Japanese saw the history of Britain in the earliest Meiji era, while the Puritan Revolution was generally neglected. We can hardly forget that the earlier Meiji era coincided with the flourishing time of the Whig interpretation of British history. During the time of the so-called Jiyu-Minken movement, the ideal type of the political revolution was found in French history, and the opposition groups borrowed their ideology and tactics not from the Puritan Revolution but from the French Revolution. At that time young Naoe Kinoshita was deeply impressed by the historical event of the execution of Charles I, and his later day's activities as a Christian socialist could not be motivated without his worship of a Puritan hero, Oliver Cromwell. In 1890 the first biography of Cromwell was written by Yosaburo Takegoshi, one of the main followers of Soho Tokutomi's Minyusha movement, and Tamotsu Shibue wrote A Political History of the Puritan Revolution (1896). Through these books the Japanese advanced their knowledge on the English Revolution.
