The purpose of my paper is to establish the visual point for grasping wholly the literature in the 30's of the Meiji era, which is not yet situated clearly in the history of Japanese literature, by taking a few men of letters as examples. As the result of considering Takayama Chogyu, Tokutomi Roka, Kunikida Doppo and Kinoshita Naoe, the following points are clarified. 1. In the literature in the 20's of the Meiji era, the functional aspect of literature to criticize the reality, and the inner aspect of it to operate on the mind of each man of letters are unified to some extent by Kitamura Tokoku and others. In the 30's of the Meiji era, however, two aspects of literature are apt to separate, and in this point we can find the peculiarity of the literary situation in those ages. 2. And it can be said that this phenomenon of separation covers all of the schools and standpoints of literature at least in the first half of the 30's of the Meiji era. 3. Therefore from the objective point of view the literature in those ages needs appearance of a new group of literati in order to reunite separate aspects of literature. 4. However, even if reunion should be accomplished by the next literary group, it will be a question whether the level of the way to unite is higher or lower, comparing with the literature in the previous 20's of the Meiji era.
