The works of Takahashi Mushimaro, such as 詠水江浦嶋子 and 見菟原処女墓歌,depict the feelings of legendary figures. In 見菟原処女墓歌, Unahiwotome's real intention and Unahiwotoko'sfeelings are described, as profound sympathy and respect are shown towards the heartbreaking lives of three individuals. In 詠水江浦嶋子,the fact that mortals cannot live in Tokoyo is expressed by revealing amisunderstanding between Uranoshimako and Kaminowotome. There are two ways to indicate quotations in Manyosyu: one is the use of an expression "…トイフ", and the other is the use of ク語法. When "…トイフ" is used, the speaker is not always identified. It seems as if the sentiments of the others"merge"into those of the speaker. Therefore, quotations can be interpreted as a display of shared feelings between the speaker and the others. Also,"…トイフ"is used to quote the words of the speaker him/herself. ク語法 clearly defines the beginning and end of a quotation, and in contrast to "…トイフ", it shows that the speaker perceives the others objectively. Thus, it is mostly used to quote the words of the others. It can be said that, while "…トイフ" has gradually gained objectivity, ク語法 was introduced later from the 漢文訓読 method. Mushimaro uses both "…トイフ" and ク語法. By using ク語法, he shows that the quotations attributed to the legendary ngures do not always express the speaker's true feelings. Such a method enables us to recognize the reality of the situation illustrated in his poems.
