Based on the research and application of the theory of environmental managment of groundwater basins and the field survey, the author, from the viewpoint of hydrology, comprehensively analyzes and studies the arsenic contamination of groundwater and driefly deals with the origin and arsenic enrichment in the groundwater of the Huanghe plain in Inner Mongolia of China. The author recognizes that the high arsenic sickness areas are bandedly-distributed and are formed in the alluvial and lacustrine basins in arid and semiarid areas, where the groundwater runoff is relatively stagnant and the groundwater is greatly influenced by the man-made irrigation activities. This research is of important reference significance in understanding the formation, distribution and prevention of arsenic contamination and also provides a basis for the further research of arsenic contamination in this area.
