American Stories portrays the US and Japanese intellectuals of the Meiji era visiting this new country. Yearning for western civilization becomes a spur for them to cherish what is called 'the American dream', which can never come true in the US, because American culture and customs can in no way provide a true spiritual home for Japanese intellectuals. The US seems to them like 'a prostitute on an obscene photograph: both are despicable and incomprehensible but enough seductive for them.
