After his trip to China of 1921 Akutagawa's literature had a great change and his romantic view on China, which he had obtained through Chinese classics, disappeared. Instead, acute criticism and realism begin to reign in his works. Uma no Ashi is the typical example, in which we can see his critical spirit against the imperialistic attitudes of Japan of those days. The work thus deserves an important position in Akutagawa's late creation in the sense that it truly reflects a conversion in the writer's method.
