In 'The Lake', Gimpei is represented many times in 'pursuit' of beautiful women. Here I investigate the meaning and necessity of the act of 'pursuit' through the relationship between the self, desire and the body, or the desiring self and eroticism. From the reaction of Gimpei, who greets every mention of 'beauty' with the word 'sorrow', I attempt to consider the relationship between Gimpei's 'guilt' and fantasies, analysing the relationship between the 'anxieties' of the Self and the Other.
