The place where earthquakes occured very frequently, that is, as it were earthquake den may be comparatively brittle part or the space where stress energy accumulate excessively. The present writer examines, from such standpoint, the space distribution of hypocentres so as to point out the location of the dens and refers to its bearing on geotectonical data. In chapter II, the relation between occurrences of intracrustal earthquakes and the crustal structure are discussed. The three dimentional distribution of the earthquakes are determined statistically. On the other hand, the model of the crustal structure has been prepared in the previous studies of the present writer. Then comparing these results, it becomes clear that the layers which compose the crust can be divided into seismic and anti-seismic ones. Basing on the abouve results, the unknown structure of the sea region where we have no seismological stations but the distribution of shocks can be clearly characterized, are deduced. As the results, some typical profiles of the crustal structure that cross Japanese arc are illustrated. The seismicity of the sub-crustal earthquakes is discussed in chapter III. The two major dens of shallow earthquakes-Hokkai and Kasima dens are still recognized in these depths. The root of dens spread to the upper mantle as if there is no distinction between the crust and mantle. Seismicity map which are expressed by isoseismic contour at various depths are illustrated. The theme of chapter IV is to find out the mutual relation between deep earthquakes (mantle earthquakes) and the behaviour of island arc. Two principal dens of deep earthquake are locating parallelly to Chishima and Izu-Ogasawara island arcs, and it becomes clear that their spreads and locations are very clossly connected with the feature of the island arc. That is, the root of arc structure can be indicated by the distribution of foci at the depth of 300 km ca. Volcanoc and islands are arraying just above the zone where the earthquakes of about 100 km in depth distribute. And the characteristics of four island arcs in the region are discussed. In brief, the subject of the study is to clear the meanings of the space distribution of earthquakes in the crust and mantle in connection with the geotectonics which are observed at the surface of the earth.
