Charlotte Bronte's first published novel, Jane Eyre (1847), is very well known for its form of autobiography, as is also the case with her Villette (1853). Its full title, Jane Eyre : An Autobiography. Edited by Currer Bell, suggests that, in order to deliberately conceal her identity, the author has written her novel in the first person singular under the pseudonym of "Currer Bell." But who is Jane Eyre? Is it sufficient to define her merely as the narrator of the novel? Is she the narrator who justly deserves the name? When she decides to write her own history, she has been married to Mr.; Rochester of Thornfield for 10 years, so that she recalls, in her capacity as Jane Rochester, what has happened to her in her younger days. This paper examines how the narrative form of Jane Rochester functions in Jane Eyre and clarifies what is revealed by Jane Rochester as the narrator of the novel who recounts the varied experiences of Jane Eyre as its heroine.
