Virginia Woolf' s formal experiment of rendering formless life into the solid form of art was enacted in two different modes of writing, short story and novel. These two ways of writing, or two forms, exhibit the two aspects of her commitment to life. One is to distil the moments of life which are essentially fluid and formless, by foregrounding and telescoping them in the autonomous realm of short story whose authenticity depends much on the solid framework as a form. The other is to instil various elements of life and its being in the long range of narrative, whose searching process can imply the elusive, hybrid nature of being. For this characteristic, life's flux and fluidity, which figuratively make the flow of continuity, can be associated with the novel, while the moments of life which cut across the flow are best expressed in the short story. Exhibiting such nature of each form, Woolf s exploration into life develops with her increasing interest in artistic experiment. In the process, To the Lighthouse marks the turning-point that illuminates "being" which is to be a dominant thematic concern of her works thereafter. Its heterogeneous, unstable quality illuminates the sharp contrast with the short story, producing unity not in a moment but through the whole structure of the novel. On the other hand, her short stories whose ideas and techniques are developed from the early ones that pinpoint "moments of life" seem to be more and more engaged in the solid form, reflecting her consciousness that "story" is itself a creation of art.
