Most previous studies concerning childhood memories have focused on the content of those memories. The purpose of this study was to analyze the story, not the content, of childhood memories and to describe the reconstruction processes through storytelling. First, the protocols of 13 female college students were categorized into three groups according to their expression styles. Then the groups were compared in terms of the "images" of the memories and the changing processes of emotion and meaning-making. Accuracy and the positioning of the self were taken to be the "images." Results indicated that the group that expressed more intellectual stories had more accurate memories and re-experiencing of one's childhood than the other groups. This indicates that accuracy was not necessarily proportional to richness of emotional experience, and therefore it could be interpreted as a defensive attitude. Moreover, heavy use of metaphoric or highly abstract expressions might cause confusion for the story-teller because the themes of the story would become very wide-ranging.
