The purpose of this paper is to analyse the processes of coinage of the word 'kensyu' for teachers in prewar Japan. Generally speaking, it has been understood that 'kensyu' was coined in postwar Japan, but it had been coined in 'Kyoiku Shingikai' in prewar Japan. It was perhaps coined with the idea that 'in-service education' is necessary to develop teachers' abilities and their 'independence' is a matter of great importance to produce a good effect on educational activities. But the idea as such had a limit. We can think that the word 'kensyu' is a shortened form of 'kenkyu' (study) and 'syuyo' (the cultivation of spirit) and the latter is the core conception. Kensyu coined in such a way lacked conditions of existences. It is a coming theme how 'kensyu' is connected with that in postwar Japan This paper consists of the following sections: I Preface II Producing the concept of 'kensyu' III The circumstances producing the concept of 'kensyu' IV Conclusion
