This thesis seeks to probe the disintegration and renewal of F. Scott Fitzgerald through his fourth novel, Tender is the Night. Fitzgerald has not published any novel for ten years since he wrote The Great Gatsby in 1925. The ten-year silence can be explained in many ways. His life was more and more restless and disordered. But the delay of the completion of Tender is the Night seems to be more due to his ambitious plans than to his predicament. That is why the novel has many versions. He strived to form its leading idea and established its fictional achievement. At the very end of The Great Gatsby Fitzgerald revealed his decision that he went on against the current of history, and he took up the theme again in this novel. Just as Gatsby lived in his old world, so Dick Diver lived there. Dick's world, which has been for some time the world of the past, is the world in which Fitzgerald reveals the innocence, incorruption and maturity of the past of America. In this novel Fitzgerald reveals another world or the new world in contrast to the old world. The new world is full of corruption, disorder and evil. There is a sort of physical and spiritual cannibalism going on between Dick and Nicole, which symbolizes the struggle between the old world and the new world. And he seems to reveal the collapse of the old world. The novel, however, does not end with Dick's wreck. We are apt to overlook the undercurrent of the novel, that is to say, the hero's efforts to win renewal in the new world. At this point Tender is the Night represents a notable turning point in Fitzgerald's novels.
