This paper aims to focus on the relationship of the Federation and the states of the United States of America, and to investigate how Chinese people understand the concept of "state" and how they began to use "州" as the Chinese equivalent for "state". Chinese people could learn some knowledge on "state" from books that Protestant missionary brought in in early 19th century. However, their knowledge was not complete, and several Chinese words were used as Chinese equivalent for "state". But the word "州" was not used to mean "state" at that time. On the other hand, Japanese people learned and understood the real essence of "state" in 1860s through Dutch books, and they used "州" as the Japanese equivalent for "state". At the beginning of 20th century, many Japanese books were brought into China, and Chinese people learned and understood of the real essence of "state", and began to use the translation word "州" finally. When people name something, as long as they put some name on it, people will eventually understand its essence and concept. However, there is also a time that people can choose the right translation only after understanding its real essence and concept. "州" is one of such example.
