How Reliable and Valid is the Adapted Version of the Foreign Language Reading Anxiety Scale (FLRAS) for Japanese University Students?

This study investigates the internal reliability and validity of the adapted version of the Foreign Language Reading Anxiety Scale (Saito, Garza, & Horwitz, 1999). The participants are 444 Japanese university students majoring in economics (n=237), agriculture (n=109), engineering (n=88), and social welfare (n=20). The value of Cronbach alpha obtained from this sample is .75, which is much lower than the value .86 in Saito et al.'s. This low reliability may be explained by the variance in the students' conceived reading situations when completing the questionnaire. The underlying structure of the scale is examined by conducting a principal component analysis. Four components were extracted: Difficulty in Global Reading, Lack of Confidence and Enjoyment, Unfamiliar Topic, Grammar, and Vocabulary, and Dissatisfaction with their Reading Ability and Activities. Furthermore, whether any significant differences can be detected in the factor scores of the four components depending on the low, middle, and high reading proficiency levels is examined by performing a MANOVA. The results reveal that the more proficient the students are, the less difficult they consider global reading and the more confident they are about reading.
