M.A. Fenton was an Englishman and a pioneer of lepidopterological survey of Japan in the early Meiji era. His findings including the descriptions of many new species greatly contributed to the elucidation of the Japanese fauna. However, his profile from birth to death was almost unknown to us. Letters written by him which have been preserved by a great-grandson of his student, A. Tanakadate, are now open to the public and offer many important facts about Fenton. Analyzing these twenty-two letters, we can describe Fenton's affairs during his stay in Japan and after his return to his homeland. The letters tell vividly his kind personality and intimate relationship to Tanakadate. He heartily appreciated nature, people and their kind hospitality in Japan and remembered them fondly throughout his life.
