The Department of Early Childhood Education has sent out its 26^<th> group of students to workplaces where they can contribute as kindergarten or nursery school teachers. They will be required to develop such qualities as "nurturers" of infants during the most critical period of their growth, and as "teachers" of preschoolers, who have rich sensibilities and potential. Music is considered to play a significant role in early childhood education. This study aims to develop new teaching methods for different types of music skills, for both individual and group instruction so that our students will learn basic piano techniques (performance and accompaniment) for their future workplaces. For. that purpose, the study reexamines (1) piano teaching formats and contents and (2) the BEYER Manual used for instruction, both of which have been used since the establishment of the Department. In addition, a questionnaire was conducted among students who were taking Piano Technique I・II, one of the piano related courses offered to students who have finished basic piano skills course. Questions were asked regarding "mid-term presentation" and "public lessons," which were newly introduced as part of the course mentioned above. Based on the results of the questionnaire, together with the re-examination of existing materials, better and more effective ways of piano instruction were considered for our students in the basic music skills courses.
