The polarization differential interferometer using a Savart plate has advantages, such as good sensitivity and high stability for environmental vibration, to detect surface irregularities and flaws. The interferometer, however, has some drawbacks unable to distinguish upward or downward for a step difference, or showing relative low sensitivity for much smaller step difference region. This comes from the dependence of the cosine function between the output of the interferometer and the step difference. If we can change the cosine-dependence to sine-dependence, those drawbacks will be settled. This report shows that the use of a 1/8 wave plate can convert the cosine-dependence to sine's, improving the performance of the interferometer remarkably.
