• This is an attempt to analyse various aspects of Japanese calligraphy. I argue that in Japanese (and probably Chinese) writing, the nature of characters is "internal" to the structure of the language while alphabet is "external" to European languages. I try to bring out various unusual characteristics of Japanese calligraphy by using examples from the "Concrete-poetry" movement in the 20th century. I also consider the change of our sensibilities that is currently taking place due to the impact of technology and media.
