The status of the copula "da" (a.k.a. hantei-shi) and that of the non-inflectional adjective (henceforth Na) such as "sizuka-da" (a.k.a. keiyoo-doosi) are closely examined and the following claims are made: a. the copula "da" is different from verbs and adjectives in terms of category in both m- and c-structures, and exhibits the paradigm (3) in the prologue, b. what is called the stem of Na such as shizuka in shizuka-da counts as a full-fledged word, in m- and c-structures c. the inflected forms of Na are in fact the compounds of Na[l, BSE] and the inflected forms of the copula "da" and are subsumed under the Na[1] m-structure rules in (4) in the prologue.
