Potassium iodide is one of the most widely used medicines in the clinic. It is sometimes used continuously in a large dose especially in the treatment of Syphilis. What influence it has upon the male sexual function when used in a large dose for a long period is a question which must be solved; and in spite of the fact that there are some discussions concerning the question, thus far they have not given any satisfactory answer. We have, therefore, carried out an experiment an four groups of male white rats, giving a small dose of potassium iodide to the lst group, a medium dose to the 2nd and a large dose to the 3rd, each for a considerable period ranging from 60 to 108 days; the 4th being a control group, was left without any special treatment. We observed the percentage of parturition of the female rate given to each of the males, and after that, examined the activity and living period of the spermatozoa taken out of the bodies of the male rats. The result proved that a continued administration of a small dose of potassium iodide does not cause any obvious injury but a medium or larger dose evidently harms the male sexual function, the limit of the harmful dose being (converted into dosage for a man of 50 Kilo bodyweight) about 1.2g daily. Physicians are therefore to be cautioned against the continued administration of the medicine especially in a large dose.
