Applying a modification of Ramon y Cajal's impregnation-method, which had been designed in our Pathological Department of the Kyoto Medical College, we made an investigation into the changes in the peripheral nerve fibres and their endings in the leg-muscles of pigeons, which had been caused to fall into a state of experimental lead palsy by feeding with a water solution of Plumbum aceticum and unpolished rice. The results of our observations are as follows: 1) In the motor nerve fibres we observed a partial or a total swelling of the axis-cylinders and nerve endings, an atrophy, a destruction or a disappearance of the end-apparatus. These changes caused by lead poisoning are more marked and stronger than those in the peripheral nerve fibres caused by B-avitaminosis or diphtheric palsy of pigeons. 2) The degeneration in the non-medullated nerve fibres is generally slight. 3) The nerve fibres in the muscle-spindle are also affected, but the changes in them are slighter than those in the nerve fibres in other skeleton muscle fibres. 4) The nerve fibres are always more severely attacked in the lower extremities than in the upper limbs. From the above-mentioned results of our examination, we assert that we can not ignore the changes in the endings of the peripheral nerve fibres, when we take the pathogenesis of lead poisoning, especially lead palsy, into consideration.
