Learning ability has been newly defined in the recent School Education Law and the Course of Study Guidelines by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. Based on "intrinsically motivated attitudes," students should be engaged in problem-solving activities with the steps "acquisition - application - investigation." In problem-solving activities, abilities such as "thinking skills, judgement skills, and expressive skills" are practiced and cultivated. Given these guidelines, this paper attempts to develop teaching materials about Ofuna, where the author's school is located, in the ultimate hope of promoting "sustainable development of the global environment," which is a critical issue worldwide. Hometowns are where we feel we belong, and thus fostering a hometown-caring mentality with regards to Ofuna can become a core of learning. Studies about Ofuna as a hometown have rarely been seen. By defining and using Ofuna as a hometown for students, this paper explores the basics of hometown learning through problem-solving activities.
