On December 28, at 21:19 Japan Standard Time, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 occurred Far East off the Tohoku district, the northeastern area of Honshu in Japan. Ground motion having on intensity of 6 on the JMA (Japan Meteorological Agency) scale was observed at the JMA's Hachinohe Station. Shocks were felt in the Hokkaido, Tohoku, Kanto, and Chubu districts. JMA named the earthquake "Sanriku Haruka-oki Earthquake, 1994". But, the name of "Sanriku Haruka-oki Earthquake" struck the public as incongruous, for the word "Haruka (Faraway)" red to the impression of light damage. This report is a study on complains for the naming of the earthquake in Japan.
