The concept of Management By Objectives has been widely accepted among many Japanese companies today. It is said that this trend makes the management system and organization of Japanese company more effective and more humanized, and leads to the 'new' Japanese-style management. Can it be true? The origin of today's MBO is Drucker's 'Management By Objectives and Self Control', but his concept as the origin has not been understood well enough. Drucker's MBO is consisted of not only some structural elements but also 'the Spirit of Organization'. The latter is the essential element in Drucker's concept but has been overlooked. This essential element is currently required in order to make the management system and organization among Japanese companies more effective and more humanized.
