In recent years, improvement of thermal efficiency of domestic energy utilization such as water heater has been required. Recovering the latent heat from the flue gas is expected to be one of the most effective methods to reduce energy consumption of domestically using water heaters. The objective of this study is to develop the condensing wall-through installation type water heater, targeting thermal efficiency over 95% (HHV). The wall-through installation type water heater is able to be installed at wall penetration flue space of the balanced-flue type bath water heater, which has been widely used in multiple dwelling houses. The fundamental study of the condensing heat exchanger was carried out by using calculation method. The thermal-hydraulic behavior in the shell and tube heat exchanger was calculated and the effect of design parameters such as tube array condition on thermal efficiency was estimated. Based on the fundamental estimation, the trial models of the condensing wall-through installation type water heater were designed. The trial test was conducted and the performance of the trial models was evaluated. The test results showed that, more than 95% of thermal efficiency was achieved.
