Women's language is more complicated to understand than most people have realized until very recently. If there is such a thing as "women's language," in either English or Japanese, it seems to involve use of different strategies of communication. Differences in understanding of functions of talk can lead to imbalance and dissatisfaction, concerning feelings of power and solidarity. Stereotypical characteristics of women's language are easily recognized, but they may vary cross-culturally. Ethnographies of Speaking are needed to focus on differences in ways of speaking in a wide variety of social situations to enable people to understand that language does not belong primarily to men, nor to women, but is a cultural tool influencing all thinking.
