As students gain proficiency in English, they are more capable of taking charge of their own learning. A transition to "autonomous learning" is one goal of the innovative BLIP (Boston Long-term Intensive Program), in which students spend a year and a half at the Boston campus of Showa Women's University. The first group, in addition to doing self-directed research projects, initiated the production of a musical-Beauty and the Beast. The author assisted them, and surveyed the leaders on how the process affected their progress in English.
