• In this paper, I consider the historical and theoretical developments of X^2 distribution. After introduction, the X^2 distribution theories of E.Abbe and F.R.Helmert are evaluated from the viewpoint of Gauss's theory of error, and then it is shown that they were reached because of the discovery of normal distribution by C.F.Gauss. Finally, I discuss a methodological character of the theory of error and its relation with modern theory of statistical inference.
