An alternative method based on the fuzzy theory is proposed for active control of vibrations in structures, which uses the real displacements of the structure to elaborate an appropriate response according to control rules that can be formulated empirically. In this way the necessity of having to deal with the equations of motion of the system is avoided. A "fuzzification" process is first performed on the data coming from the sensors to the logic controller, and then a "defuzzification" process is used to translate the response of this controller to the actuators. A numerical example Is included to examine some aspects of reliability and robustness of the proposed algorithm, some 'comparisons are made with a simple closed-open loop optimal method.
