In this paper, I deal with the works of Shashi Deshpande, and examine the way in which she represents the history of Indian women who have been silenced in a patriarchal society of their country. The characters in her novels, as well as the author herself, translate into English local languages spoken by women and enable female subdued voices to be heard in public. In The Binding Vine and Small Remedies, female narrators reveal the hidden truth about women's lives in the former generation so that untold histories of oppressed women will be unveiled. In A Matter of Time, women are represented not only as narrators of histories but as inheritors who pass a family history down from generation to generation. Deshpande's works question how histories are descended and recreated in female narratives and translation.
