This study was intended to obtain data for the process of learning an ideal style of swimming by analyzing, comparing, and considering the form, stroke pattern, and bubble pattern of backstroke for skilled and non-skilled swimmers in order to clarify the relationship between speed and resistance. As a method, two fifteen meters trials were recorded in water video camera. They were analyzed and printed per three frames by video analyzer (thirty frames per second). The ideal style of backstroke is the parallelism between water surface and the trunk and the formation of S shape while pushing the water. Similar movements were observed in skilled swimmers. The observed trends of non-skilled swimmers were as follows: 1. The arms were too deeply and vertically directed into the water to make a quick pull action in the process of catching the water. 2. Because of the circle movement of pull pattern and slow tempo of pull action, swimming was dependent upon slight buoyancy causing the time of recovery to slip. 3. Propelling and floating forces were not achieved because of the incapability of actively pushing backward the water surrounding the body. 4. Since the supine position on the water surface was not kept, waist and legs sunk accompanied by great resistance. To what extent can the swimmer perceive his movement? Also, by what method and to what degree can the instructor stimulate the swimmer's movement perception and make him practice in the process of repeating the movement? This would be the important issue in vears to come.
