The purpose of this study is to identify the husband's expectations and attitudes towards the activity of daily living of his wife with depression after her discharge. Qualitative data from the interviews with 3 husbands of middle aged female patients with depression reveal the husbands' expectations and attitudes. The husbands expect their wives to keep the house neat, to live at ease without exertion, and to change their cognitive style. The husbands are confused about the inconsistency between the words and the behavior of their wives, but they try to find their own way to support their wives. Their confusion may derive from the difficulty of understanding their wives, because of the wives' disturbance in thinking which results in their lower ability to do household work. The symptoms of a patient with depression are often implicit, and the husbands have little knowledge about the cognitive distortion of a patient with depression. This may also lead to their confusion. Nurses could explain various symptoms due to the disturbance in thinking and encourage a husband to understand his wife with depression, then the husband would be able to support his wife more effectively.原著Original Paper
