The direct current potential difference method is one of the methods for detection of a crack initiation point in the fracture toughness test. The evaluation of fracture toughness value through this method contains manual processes to detect a crack initiation point. Therefore, the evaluated value contains an individual error. The computer program for evaluation of the fracture toughness value without manual processes has been developed in this study. A graph recorded by the X-Y recorder in the fracture toughness test is converted to digital image data by an image scanner. From the image data, digital data (the load, the potential difference and the displacement) are generated. The crack initiation point is detected automatically from the relation of the potential difference and displacement. Finally the fracture toughness value is evaluated by the detected point and the relation of the load and the displacement. This program was applied to evaluate the fracture toughness value of the aluminum alloy. The evaluated value was near to the value obtained by the past method. The effectiveness of this program has been confirmed.
