This paper analyzes the factors of rapid quality improvement in Chinese molds. By the end of 1990s, Japanese mold industry held a dominant position in the global market. And the technology transfer of mold production to the foreign countries was extremely difficult, because high technical skills that control the quality of automobile and electrical parts of mass production were required to produce the molds. After 2000, however, the introduction of technological innovation such as the 3D Solid CAD system and the employment of Japanese technical experts made it possible for Chinese manufacturers to produce high quality molds. Based on the analytical framework of "the category number of skills" and "the introduction of the standard of technological innovation", the author conducted a field research between 2003 and 2005 on 20 Chinese mold manufacturers. Moreover, the author reviewed the previous studies and his findings of research conducted on mold manufacturers since 1993. In this paper, therefore, the author classified "skills" into 5 categories as follows: (1) "routine skill", (2) "craft-type skill", (3) "intellectual inference skill", (4) "skill of adaptation to changes", and (5) "managerial integration skill". And besides, "the introduction of technological innovation" in this paper means the progress of machine tools and software. It benefited the mold manufacturing skills in Japan after WWII. In other words, Japanese manufacturers created the new skills fit for the technological innovation. The previous research (before 2003) done by the author shows that the majority of the Chinese manufacturers were commercial capitalistic. But some of the manufacturers in this study appear to be on the principle of industrial capital. These new types of manufacturers introduced technological innovation, and furthermore, succeeded in technology adaptation by employing Japanese technical experts who excel in diversified skills as categorized above. The author reached the conclusion that two factors of rapid quality improvement like introduction of innovation and skills of Japanese experts in a Chinese plastic mold are to adopt as an effective method.
