Pinus lutchuensis, introduced to the Bonin Islands in 1899, has been seriously damaged by the attack of the pine wood nematode at Chichijima since 1979. The nematode infection spread all over the island in four years. The rapid spread of nematode infection and the occurrence of an infected tree in an isolated area suggest that the Japanese pine sawyer played an important role as a vector of the infection. The unusual aridness in the summer of 1980 may have increased the damage by the nematode infection. The phenomena studied in this work can be explained as an alien's invasion of a place where former occupants have no tolerance to the alien.
