Utai-sho (謡抄) is an annotation book of Noh (能), a type of work generally called "Sho-mono" (抄物). Utai-sho was compiled under the instruction of TOYOTOMI Hidetsugu (1568〜1595). More than twenty famous men of culture undertook the annotation. It is probable that it was completed around 1605. This paper investigates how the word "fushigi" (不思議) is used in Noh as a key word and how "fushigi" had been explained in Utai-sho. In this study, Kurumaya-bon-Yokyokushu (車屋本謡曲集) as a Noh-Text is used. The results are as follows: i) A total of 112 examples of the word "fushigi" (不思議) were found in 55 Noh compositions out of 82. ii) Among the 112 examples, the annotaion was added to only nine examples. When the example of the variant text is added, the total becomes 15. iii) As the word "fushigi" was used as a household word, the necessity of the annotation was not too high in Utai-sho. iv) The following paraphrases of "fushigi" were discovered. There are seven examples of Omofifacarazaru (zu), there examples of Omofazaru (nu), five examples of Omofiyorazaru (zu). v) It should be noted that the most frequent paraphrase, "Omofifacarazaru (zu)" is also used as a "Jikun" (字訓) in VOCABVLARIO DA LINGOA DE IAPAM com a declaracao em Portugues (日葡辞書). vi) For several annotations of "fushigi", it was possible to identify different commentators by the styles and notation. Other words and expressions found in Utai-sho will be investigated in future papers.
