This paper provides an up-to-date survey on the role of formulaic sequence in language acquisition, explores how it is linked to language fluency, and attempts to seek some implications for foreign language teaching. First, the mechanism of formulaic sequence is explained, and then, the argument surrounding the difficulties of definition and identification of formulaic sequence is summarized. After this, literature on the role of formulaic sequences in the first, second, and foreign language acquisition is briefly overviewed, and the relationship with language fluency is examined. Finally, on the basis of the whole survey and discussion, some useful points of teaching formulaic sequences in the EFL/ESL classrooms are highlighted.
