This paper is concerned with the differences between the particle le, which is commonly used in standard Chinese, and the Cantonese tone particle la, appearing at the end of sentences. My theirs has revealed 3 variants of le. First, let occurs when le is used in the middle of the sentence and behind the predicate verb. Secondly, le2 appears at the end of sentences without lei. Lastly, les is used at the end of a sentence with lei. We found that le2 has two uses: one as an aspect marker, and the other as a tone particle, whereas le3 is just a tone marker. However, the particle la found in Cantonese is considered only as a tone particle and has a single grammatical use. In the cases of le2 and les, we found that as both appear at the end of sentences, they can also function as tone particles. So far, many researchers have equated le and la with similar particles used in different languages. However in the course of our research we found some differences that discredit this thinking, and some different uses for la.Therefore, this paper is concerned with finding possible instances of sentences using le2 or le.s that might correspond with Cantonese counterparts using la.
