I began studying the taxonomy of Japanese polychaetes in 1957, and have continued this study after retiring from the National Science Museum, Tokyo in 1994. In 1962, I studied the Japanese polychaetes with Dr. Olga Hartman at the University of Southern California and we were published in "The polychaetous annelids of Japan, Part I, II" (1964) by the University of Southern California. This publication includes 50 families, 227 genera and 467 species of the Polychaeta. Afterwards I described polychaetes collected from many localities around Japan, and at present there are some 930 species, including 233 holotypes I designated, from Japanese waters. The total number of figures written about those specimens amounts to 9200. I am proceeding with the work of entering various information about 550 polychaete species into a personal computer database.
