Further improvement of fuel efficiency and the reduction of CO_2 emissions from automobile are among the greatest challenges racing automotive industry and should be accelerated to combat global climates change and green house gases. In Japan, the CO_2 emissions from transport sector have been getting reduced since 2001. This is mainly contributed by 1) improvement of automobile fuel efficiency, 2) management of road traffic and 3) encouragement of eco-driving behavior and reduced mileage of vehicles. The improvement of fuel efficiency was achieved due to innovative technologies development by automobile industry as well as a broad strategic policy approach by government, such as stringent fuel efficiency standard and tax incentive system. The innovative technologies (i.e. improvement of engine efficiency, reduction of drivetrain loss and vehicle running resistance) developed by Japanese automobile industry are the most advanced in the world and need to be kept developing in meeting the energy (diversification as well as conservation) and climate changes challenge in the future.
