The 1lth General Meeting of the International Mineralogical Association was held in Novosibirsk from September 4 to 19, 1978. There were both pre-and post-conference excursions to the Lake Baikal and mineralogical museums in Moscow and Leningrad, as well as two other trips. This meeting gave us a very unique opportunity to see the activities in socialists' countries on gemmological researches, whose information has hardly been conveyed to the other part of the world. There was a full day symposium on "Gem Minerals an Gemmology" on "Crystal Growth", and two half day symposia on "High Pressure Minerals", in which papers of gemmological interests were presented, which include many papers by scientists of socialists' countries. Altogether 36 papers of gemmological interests presented in these symposia are critically reviewed in this article, through which gemmological activities in socialists' countries are introduced. Among 36 papers, 15 papers are on diamond, which reflects the interests in diamonds in USSR. There were altogether 5 papers reporting the syntheses of gem materials. Emeralds have been successfully synthesized by flux, hydrothermal and CVT methods at the Institute of Geology and Geophysics, Novosibirsk, alexandrite by Czochralski technique at the same institute, amethyst and other coloured quartz by the Institute "VlNISIM", Alexsandrov, tourmaline at the Institute of Crystallography, Moscow, as well as well-known cubic zirconia. Geological and mineralogical studies were reported on charoite, new purple coloured ornamental mineral, nephrite of various colour, Iazurite near the Lake Baikal, several pegmatites, ruby and sapphire in the Karelian-Kola region. Gem minerals, including mordavite, found in Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria, Poland, Yugoslavia are also reported by scientists of respective countries. Interesting were papers on fresh-water pearls found in inland lakes of USSR, and on amber and other fossil resins. Clearly mineralogy of amber has been studied extensively in USSR. The Working Group on Gem Minerals and Gemmology, which was initiated at the IMA-9, 1974, and has not been active enough, was decided to be re-organized at the Council Meeting of IMA, and Sunagawa and Savkevich were nominated as chairman and secretary of the W. G., respectively. The W. G. decided to change its name to the Working Group on Gem Materials, and its aim is to encourage and stimulate research activities on gem materials, both natural and synthetic. The W. G. organizes a symposium on gem materials during IMA-12 to be held in Orleans, France in June,1980, and Schubnel will act as its conveyner.
