Generally, high speed and lightly loaded cylindrical roller bearings tend to have a slip between rolling components. This slip leads to skidding when large rate of slip occurs under poor oil film formation between roller and race contact area. To avoid the failure owing to skidding, major design problem with high speed roller bearings is how to reduce the slip rate to the level of no skidding condition. To confirm bearing operating characteristics up to a speed of 3.5M DN and outer ring temperature of 300℃, tests of a 140-mm-bore cylindrical roller bearing with advanced materials and developed lubricant were conducted. In this test program, effects of lubricating conditions (oil temperature and oil flow rate) and bearing radial internal clearance on the slip and bearing temperature were studied. It was found that bearing temperature increased as flow rate decreased and outer ring temperatures were always higher than inner ring temperatures. Therefore, bearing clearance increased owing to the thermal expansion difference of inner and outer ring during operations. Cage slip was affected by bearing clearance, oil flow rate, oil supply temperature. Cage slip decreased with decreasing bearing clearance and oil flow rate or increasing oil temperature. No cage slip occurred at a speed of 3.5M DN because bearing had tight running internal clearance. The test bearing with assembled radial internal clearance of 38μm successfully operated at 3.5M DN and outer ring temperature of 300℃ under oil flow rate of 5e/min and oil supply temperature of 230℃. The developed ethereal lubricant was effective to lubricate bearing without remarkable wear and seizure up to 3.5M DN and outer ring temperature of 300℃.
