The method to broaden an operating range of a high pressure ratio centrifugal compressor by the replacement of a vaned diffuser with a low solidity diffuser was considered. The tested compressor was designed for a marine use turbocharger, which requires a wide operating range and a high pressure ratio. Based on the tested results of the combination of the impeller with the vaneless, vaned and low solidity diffusers, the characteristics of the compressor with the low solidity diffusers were investigated. It is necessary for the improvement on the compressor efficiency with the low solidity diffuser to increase the pressure recovery in the diffuser system. This study proposed one of the countermeasures for the increase of the pressure recovery factor in the diffuser system with the low solidity diffuser. Even though the low solidity diffuser has no geometrical throat, the low solidity diffuser could limit the compressor maximum flow rate. This study showed that the maximum flow rate, which the low solidity diffuser determined, played an important role on the selection of the low solidity diffuser. This paper proposed the simple prediction method for the maximum flow rate in the low solidity diffuser based on the calculation with CFD and oil flow visualization.
