This study presents a measurement technique for a periodically fluctuating flow using a hot wire anemometer, in which a data sampling and reduction technique is described. This method is applied for the discharge flow from an impeller in an unstable operating region of a centrifugal compressor. The flow from the impeller exit undergoes a periodic fluctuation caused by the blade rotation. During rotating stall, there comes another fluctuating signal on it. Therefore two different phase-locking processes should be employed in order to observe the blade-to-blade flow characteristics during rotating stall. The first process is the phase adjustment to the rotating stall and the other is the adjustment to the blade rotation, which is called as DPLEAT (Double Phase-Locked Ensemble Averaging Technique) in this paper. From these measurement and data processing techniques, the characteristics of the blade-to-blade flow in respect to the rotating stall can be observed clearly.
