The dynamic interaction of motor and exhaust-gas turbocharger with variable geometry is of major interest for the automotive industry as well as for manufacturers of internal combustion engines. Caused by the highly complex relationships, up to now it did not succeed to establish a concept that is capable of describing the dynamics of the entire system, consisting of combustion engine and turbocharger, sufficiently. This paper is aimed to show a way, to solve the task of process simulation satisfactory. With the employment of the so-called heuristic method it is shown, how optimum turbine operation, with zero incidence at wheel inlet and irrotational flow at wheel outlet, may be realized for any exhaust-gas mass flow by means of variable nozzle guide vanes. The variation of parameters shows the influence of different inlet and outlet blade angles of the turbine rotor on the optimum working conditions. Additionally, by means of a speculative mathematical set up for the friction torque, the bearing friction can be considered during dynamic turbocharger operation, and ultimately the attachment of the compressor can be optimized. This will be presented in a later paper.
