Three dimensional flow field in a small centrifugal compressor impeller was analyzed with a three dimensional viscous flow code. The accuracy of prediction was examined for the effective application of three dimensional flow analysis for compressor impeller design system. The comparisons between the measurements and the calculations are presented for overall performance and spanwise flow distributions at the impeller exit for various operating conditions. The calculations indicate good agreement with the experiments in regard to overall characteristics of total pressure ratio and efficiency, excepting at low flow rate. The occurrence of the reverse flow near the shroud is predicted at low flow rate. However, total pressure ratio and efficiency are underpredicted at low flow rate. The comparison of flow distributions at the impeller exit indicates that the underprediction is due to the inaccurate calculations of the secondary flows on the pressure surface side of the splitter blade near the impeller shroud. The accurate prediction of these loss mechanisms in the impeller is necessary to apply three dimensional viscous codes to compressor impeller design system.
