For the improvement of the engine performance, ceramic turbine blades were designed and applied to a 300kW-class gas turbine (CGT301). The objective of the study was to evaluate the reliability of ceramic blades and to insure the reliability of the ceramic blade in the gas turbine applications. To achieve this objective, the fast-fracture strength of the designed blade was evaluated by the cold-spin testing by NGK Spark Plug Co., Ltd. After cold-spin proof testing, hot-spin tests were carried out under various modes such as over-speed testing, the steady-state spin and cyclic-spin tests. The designed ceramic blades survived those tests and any damage was not detected by dyepenetratry non-distractive inspections. The reliability of ceramic blades for the operational lifetime of 20 hours (which is the current goal) has been confirmed experimentally in hot-spin tests.
