The paper provides a synopsis of the main research activities currently pursued at the Technical University of Berlin with respect to the reliability evaluation of thermomechanically loaded ceramic rotor components. First analytical and experimental results for hot-pressed silicon nitride (HPSN) and SiC-whisker-reinforced HPSN (SiC_w-HPSN) rotor discs under static as well as under cyclic mechanical loading at elevated temperatures are presented. A cold and hot spin test facility is described which is additionally equipped with a non-contact transient measurement technique to determine the test rotor surface temperature distribution under real working conditions. CFD-calculations have been performed to validate the measured temperatures and to determine the surface temperatures of optically inaccessible areas. The finite-element analysis (FEA) has been used to calculate several boundary conditions required for the final rotor lifetime prediction. Therefore the numerical postprocessor CERTUB has been developed to compute the fast fracture reliability as well as the time-dependent reliability of ceramic components.
