Ultrahigh bypass engine (UBE) is considered as the propulsion of next generation energy efficient subsonic aircrafts. UBE is expected to provide for those characteristics such as very low fuel consumption rate, quietness and the compatibility with high speed flight. National Aerospace Laboratory has been conducting a research program on an ultrahigh bypass engine called SC-UBE since 1987 as shown in Fig.1. The program is aimed at developing basic technologies in advance of the successive efforts by engine manufacturers to develop UBE. Four major research areas have been set forth. Those are engine system, ducted fan, low-emission combustion and ultrahigh temperature turbine. In this paper, summary of those progresses made in the program up to now is described.
